Board books must be printed and bound directly on thick paperboard. Board books must be durable and made to withstand the chomping, chewing, bending and attempted tearing that babies and toddlers love to make part of their early reading experience.

All of Pint Size’s board books are printed directly on a thick paperboard, creased, folded, collated, bound, trimmed and then round cornered and sometimes shaped. We take great pride in our USA board book factory and our use of premium USA materials. We make sure that every board book that we produce is made using safe materials and processes that provide the highest level of quality and production consistency. We regularly safety test our board books with a certified independent testing lab in order to insure that our board books are always in compliance with United States CPSC requirements for all ages.

1. What is considered a board book?

A board book is a type of children's book printed on thick paperboard.

The paperboard is printed and used for both the cover and the interior pages.

Board books are very durable and consequently are intended for small children, who often tend to be less gentle with books.

2. Why Board Books are Safer for Babies

Designed for babies from birth to age 3, board books are safer than their counterparts. They fit perfectly in their little hands, can be easily held, turned, stacked, and tossed. However, babies also like to explore everything with their mouths, which is one of the reasons why board books are safer. You’d rather have them chew the corner of a board book than munch and swallow pieces of paper.

Additionally, Pint Size Productions uses safe materials that are made in the USA. Our board books are coated with either gloss UV or Aqueous matte coating. And we never laminate our board books due to the hazard of using film lamination on a baby book. We also regularly safety test our board books with a certified independent testing lab to make certain our board books are always in compliance with the United States CPSC requirements.

3. How many pages should a board book be?

When setting up your board book design, choose facing pages in your layout software. When generating the PDF for printing, choose “Spreads” to generate the final printing files. Kids' board books are usually between 8 and 12 spreads (16 to 24 pages) with color pictures, and either no text or text up to about 300 words.
